Brief History:

Originally founded in 1920, the current NFL is comprised of 32 teams. It is divided into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each Conference has 4 divisions, and each division is comprised of 4 teams, thus 16 teams per conference.

There are 17 weeks in any regular NFL season. Each team plays 16 games and has 1 bye week. After completing the regular season, 6 teams from each conference with the best records will advance to the playoffs, where they play a series of single elimination games. The last two teams to survive play in the Super Bowl, which is the most watch television event in history.

Very brief general rules:

-The playing field is 100 yards long; each end zone is 10 yards long.

-The object of the game is to get into the opponent’s end zone and score the most points.
-Each team gets four downs (or chances) to move 10 yards. Each successful completion of 10 yards is equal to a new set of downs.
-A touchdown is equivalent to 6 points. A player must bring the ball into or catch the ball in the end zone for a legitimate touchdown.
-After the touchdown, the scoring team has the option of going for the extra point by kicking the ball through the upright, or 2 points by running the ball into the end zone (called a two point conversion).
-Teams can also kick a fieldgoal, consisting of kicking the ball through the upright from anywhere on the field (theoretically)
-If the team with possession is too far to get the ball into the end zone or kick a field goal, they can punt the ball to the other team. This results in no points, and a change of possession.

Point spread:

Betting the spread consists of placing money on the difference between the scores of two teams.
For example:

→ Pittsburgh is favored to win vs. Baltimore. The spread is 6.5 points (+6.5) ←

Meaning in order to cover the spread and make money on your bet, Pittsburgh must win by at least 7 points. If they cannot cover the spread, the bet is lost regardless of if Pittsburgh wins the game.

Spread will often include half numbers in order to avoid a tie, or push.

Conversely, if you were to bet against the spread in this case, Baltimore would have to either loose by less than 6.5 points, or win the game outright.

What to look for in a good spread:

A good spread is all dependent on circumstances. This is where intuition comes into play, as there are several factors to consider. In our above example, if Baltimore has been playing well and have been putting up points in recent games, it may be favorable to bet against the spread.

On the other hand, if Pittsburgh has a convincing record and has been playing well in recent games, playing a sluggish Baltimore team, it may be advantageous to bet the spread. By betting the spread in this case you believe that Pittsburgh will beat Baltimore by more than 6.5 points.

Again, this is an oversimplification of the many factors that can influence a point spread. The individual placing the bet must be aware of games played prior, dynamic, history, point totals, rushing and passing yards, consistency and home field advantage just to name a few.

Moneyline:

A moneyline wager is a bet straight up on who you believe will win the game. Using our above proposed example:

The moneyline is:

• Pittsburgh -180$

• Baltimore +140$

In this case, Baltimore is the underdog. The +140$ indicates that for every 100$ you bet, you will receive 140$ return.
On the other hand, Pittsburgh is the favorite. Thus, for every 100$ won, you must put down 180$.

Note: You do not need to bet 100$, payout ratio odds are scaled to your actual wager in question.

NCAA Draft:

Every April, the NFL teams will draft new players from the NACC, or college football league. Teams are ranked in inverse order based on the previous season’s record, with the team having the worst record picking first, and the second-worst picking second, and so on. The draft consists of 7 rounds.

During the 7 rounds, teams have the options of trading their picks for money, players or other picks. Once drafted, the team has exclusive rights over that player. They can take the following year to negotiate a contract.

Free Agency:

Teams may also choose to look at either restricted or unrestricted free agents. A free agent is a player who is not under contract by any team, and hence has the right to negotiate a new contract with any team.

Restricted free agents are those who have at least 3 years of experience and whose original team can match the offer (if they so choose) and retain the services of that particular player.

Unrestricted free agents are players who have at least 4 years of experience in the league. They are not bound to any team and can negotiate a contract freely with any team they wish.
